If you have a question that is not answered below then please feel free to submit a ticket and we will send you the answer by email (and add the question to the list). We do also accept technical questions and offer setup advise via the ticket system (free of charge) even of you are not using a PXE package.

Q: I'm struggling to get OpenSim running, can you help me?
A: The packages PXE offer are designed to take the setup problems away and provide a clean easy to use system by which you can manage you virtual empire. However we do understand not everyone wants to purchase something, in this case we are happy to offer technical advise via our ticket system free of charge (also check out out soon to arrive 'PXE Home Hosted' package).

Q: Who is PXE?
A: Check out the 'About PXE' link in the above menu

Q: What can PXE offer me?
A: PXE offers people who wish to own land/region(s) on the OSGrid a simple and effective solution to getting this service without the need for all the technical knowledge required to get an OpenSim working correctly.

Q: Whats the difference between OSGrid and OpenSim?
A: OpenSim (or OpenSimulator) is the server side software that runs a single region (or several). The OSGrid is an established virtual world where each 65536m2 of 'land' is held on a server running the OpenSim software. Essentially the OSGrid is the virtual world, the OpenSim software is the actual land in the world.

Q : What is OSGrid?
A: OSGrid is a new publicly developed version of the grid run by Linden Labs. The OSGrid is still under development and as such some things that are on the LL grid do not function on the OSGrid yet. OSGrid is based on the OpenSimulator platform, an open source version of the software that runs regions on the LL grid.

Q: Can I run OpenSim on my machine at home and have this land in the OSGrid world?
A: Yes you can, but the process is more complicated than it first seems and there are technical considerations. However PXE is currently designing an easy to use home package that will take most of the technical knowledge requirements out of running it from home.

Q: How does PXE work then?
A: PXE offers connectivity solutions to allow the creation of region(s) within the OSGrid for minimal fuss. Because the OpenSimulator software is still in development it takes a degree of technical knowledge and skill to get it running and administer it. PXE takes most of the requirement away and allows you to purchase/rent these skills as well as the server space to run your 'land'.

Q: Does PXE charge for this service?
A: Yes each 'package' has a rental charge. This charge is as minimal as possible and is designed to cover the server costs as well as the management and web interface systems. Each package is different, however PXE will not sell/rent space less than 1/4 of a region due to the running systems involved.
NOTE: At the present time (due to restrictions on the web interface) the smallest available unit is a single region.

Q: Can I change my package or add to it?
A: Yes at any time you may add to your package as a separate invoice-able item, however please remember that this addional subscription becomes active and is payable in advance.

Q: How long does it take to get a region?
A: The process of commissioning a region depends on the package you order. If you order one full region the time scale is approximately 24-48 hours as the region is added to an existing server (where possible). If you order a service with a dedicated 'instance' this can take up to 72hours as the server space has to be allocated and new software commissioned.

Q: Why OSGrid and not one of the others?
A: PXE chose to offer this service initially on the OSGrid as it's one of the most populated and functional grids outside of Linden Labs. The OSGrid is also the location of the virtual HQ of PXE.

Q: Why does my region show a maxium prim imit of 15,000 yet the package I ordered allows for only 10,000?
A: The reason for this is because the SecondLife or Hippo viewers assume a physical limit of 15000 which is the limit imposed by Linden Labs on there servers. On the OpenSim server the limit is only governed by the available memory in the server. We have determined the number of average prims (a mix of complex shapes and simple boxes) that can be fit into the server memory allocated to each package and this is what we advertise.

Q: Can I purchase 2 regions each with 5,000 prims to give me more prims on one region?
A: Yes you can purchase 2 region basic packages (5,000 prims each) and leave one as just water, this will give you 10,000 usable prims on the remaining land. However in order to do this we must know in advance (please submit a ticket) so that your regions are installed on the same physical server and the memory limits allocated as a single chunk.

Q: Whats the difference between having a Region or Server package?
A: In the Region package you will receive a single region installed on one of PXE's existing servers with the correct memory and resource allocation for the level of package you ordered. With a Server package you can choose just how many regions you install (within a practical limit) and share the resources with. Your regions will be alone on the server and not have any influences on them beyond your own regions.

Q: I have a Server package but it says I can only have a maximum of 2 regions and 10,000 prims. Can I install 9 regions in a square and use all 10,000 prims on a island in the middle. Therefore keeping the other 8 as water around my island?
A: Yes this is possible. The limit for 2 regions on the package is imposed to discourage the installation of many regions without consideration. However if you wish to install your server this way please submit a ticket and the required changes will be made. Please consider that installing a region (even an empty water only region) will effect the total number of prims you can use as empty regions require server memory to run. In the 3x3 square example the center is the 'operational' region and the ring around it are all water. In this case a 2 region server (10,000) prims will be reduced to a practical operational limit of 8400 (empty region requires approximately 200 prims worth of memory space).
