If you have a question that is not answered below then please feel free to submit a ticket and we will send you the answer by email (and add the question to the list). We do also accept technical questions and offer setup advise via the ticket system (free of charge) even of you are not using a PXE package.
Q: I'm struggling to get OpenSim running, can you help me? A: PXE offers both 1 to 1 consultance for those that need help getting started but our more popular solution is a pre-configured grid or region system. PXE can setup a server(s) for you an provide you with the files to load on your own hardware.
Q: Who is PXE? A: Check out the 'About PXE' link in the above menu
Q: What can PXE offer me? A: PXE mainly offers OpenSim based grids an portal for grid management that provides many of the day to day tasks as easy to use buttons or even an fully automatic processed (our crash detection and restart system).
Q: Can I run OpenSim on my machine at home and have this land in someone elses world? A: Yes you can, we can provide both fully hosted region servers (for your land on someone else grid) or a pre-configured region server package that you can install on almost any hardware to connect you to any of the 'Open' worlds. 'Open' worlds are defined as worlds that allow you to connect your OpenSim based regions rather than purchase land from them (OSGrid is the prime example).
Q: How does PXE work then? A: PXE offers license packages for it's grid control and management softwware to grid owners. However this does allow us to act as consultants to struggling grid owners or offer pre-configured systems for both Full grids and Regions attached to other grids.
Q: Does PXE charge for this service? A: Yes each 'License' has a rental charge. This charge is as minimal as possible and is designed to cover the server costs as well as the management and web interface systems. Each license is different as in the 'In Partnership with' license is charged on a per module basis with the customer renting only the modules they wish to use. The 'Hosted by' license is for all modules but becausde the grid is hosted at PXE's datacenter the customer pays on a per region basis.
Q: Can I change my license or add to it? A: Yes at any time you may add to your license to give you access to more of the system, or with 1 months notice remove modules from your license.
Q: How does the control software interface to MY Grid? A: The control software requires two key elements to function, the first being a connection to your grid database(s). This is provided by a restictied account on your database server and a forwarded port thought your firewall. For securirty PXE's control system is only avaliable though a single IP address and therefore your firewall can be locked to only accept data on the required port through this address. The second is via a small agent on the region servers, this agent provides data back to the PXE control software by submitting it through the internet. The only data moved over this connection is CPU/RAM and console commands, due to the one way design of this connector it is not possible for a third party to control your server through this client as it will only ask PXE for informnation and never accept information it has not asked for.
